my creative 'desk'

Hello everyone!

I was working on my final project for my Advanced Costume Designing class and all of a sudden I had like a panoramic view of my table. I was like... wow... my table actually looks really cool... like a REAL artist was working. hehehe. so I decided to take a picture and post it for you to see! The stuff I chose were unconsciously intentional, like the cups for my color pencils. I always take all my colors out of their boxes and keep them in a zip lock bag. But on this day i wanted them to be more accessible to me and to actually look pretty! we bought a set of cups from World Market (my favourite but very overpriced store: these cups were $10 for a set 5). They are of different cities around the world so i picked my 2 favourite: Paris and Tokyo. And i decided to put my lalaloopsy doll near me to keep me company (she's like my mini muse!). I wasn't expecting to post a picture of my table at all, but i thought it was appropriate! Oh and of course, i was listening to Pandora!
So enjoy the craziness that keeps me sane! I love you all and hope you have a great week!

love,
Rachel/rae/Sven

It's been too long...

So finally i have a little bit of time this Easter break to post on my blog... honestly i have been thinking and missing my blog! Well, a lot has happened since the last time i posted. Ryan, Prakash and I will be moving to Alabama come this fall. Ryan will be doing his Doctorate in Music at the University of Alabama and i will be continuing with my undergrad in Theatre with emphasis in Costuming. I am excited yet dreading the full load i have to take for the next 4 years to get my degree. But i love what i have been doing and definitely see this as a career for life in some form or fashion.
But before we move this fall, we will be packing up and putting everything in storage to move to Rapid City (about 6 hours away, where Ryan's family lives) for the summer. I got a job at the Black Hills Playhouse ( a summer gig) to work as a stitcher for the 4 shows they will be putting up, plus designing for one of them. I am excited, humbled and scared out my mind, but i think this will be a good experience for me. Ryan and Prakash will be living with the 'rents while i live in Custer State Park (absolutely beautiful!) for 3 months. They will be about 30 minutes away from me so it won't be horrible! But it a FULL time job and something i think that will be a way of life during the summer for our family. IT will be something like this in some form or fashion that Ryan and i will be doing during the summer for the next few years.
With this post is a picture of a Victorian style bonnet that i made for the play that i designed for called Woman in Black. I love this hat!!
Hope you all had a great Easter weekend!

learning...

YAY! Was fiddling around my blog and found out how to personalize it! There, looks much better now! More posts to come!

So Much Later than I was planning...

This is also a project I did in Stage Craft class. It was dyeing fabric using a batik method. I found this cool tattoo of a beta (Siamese Fighting Fish) online and had to use it. It's not a traditional batik using beeswax but it's using a chemical resist. This was fun to experiment with too!

I have a love affair with...

FABRIC PAINT!!! LOVE it! i was introduced to Dye-Na-Flow liquid fabric paints in my Stage Crafts class last semester. We had to make a sample book of different types of fabric modification techniques and was given a project using any of the techniques on a silk chiffon scarf. So, of course, i picked these paints to use! Here are the results... It's still on my wishlist and haven't bought them yet, even though they are pretty reasonably priced... i think i will order them this weekend!!

Well... Here I Am!

I've always wanted to start a blog... and have done 2 before this one but never knew what really to write about. With the advent of Facebook, writing about family seemed redundant. Then I realized that a lot of what I'm doing right now in school doesn't get shared much by family and friends, especially those that live overseas. I'm proud of what I'm doing right now and would love to share it with you.
Currently, I am a student at the University of South Dakota, majoring in Theatre Production and Design with a focus in Costume Designing. I AM LOVING IT!! It's not easy, especially trying to manage a family (Prakash will be 3 in March) and working on projects, meeting deadlines, etc, but I feel like I am coming into my own. This is definitely not a choice I made when I was leaving Malaysia (why would i want to do Math and Social Science at my age???), but I feel God has opened up doors for me to do so and i feel really blessed!
So for all of you who will come and visit my blog, I will be posting, hopefully weekly or more, projects I am currently working on and other random things about being creative (even being a creative mother to a creatively crazy 3 year old boy!).
So here we go...
